Chapter 6

Cassie walked home, every step feeling like her shoes were filled with lead.

She wanted to go, find Mav, tell him she would marry him, tell him that’s what she’d always wanted, and beg him to pick her.

But that wasn’t keeping her word to the Lord. So she directed her steps toward home, reminding herself that she had a big project to do, that she was blessed to have work, that she was blessed to have life and breath, and to enjoy what God had given her, without thinking that she deserved more somehow.

She’d barely gone into her house and gotten a cup of coffee made and poured, carrying it into her office, before there was a quick rap on her door, and then it burst open.

She stuck her head out of her office door, looking down the hall toward the front door where Teagan stood in her house, looking breathless and disheveled and calling out, “Cassie! Cassie! You won’t believe what I just heard!”

It was amazing that they hadn’t passed each other in town, as small as Sweet Water was and as closely as Teagan had followed her into the house.

“I’m here,” Cassie said, stepping out of her office and walking down the hall.

“Oh my goodness, Cassie. You won’t believe it.”

Teagan was one of the few people who knew about Cassie’s crush. Knew that she had a thing for Mav for years. She also knew that Mav had never had the time of day for her.

“Mav is trying to find a wife!”

“Trying?” She would have thought he’d have found one by now. She had figured Teagan had come to tell her about his wedding, except Teagan looked excited, and she probably wouldn’t look so happy if she had bad news.

“Yes. Still trying.” She grinned. “It’s Mav, so of course he announced it, then promptly left town, and no one has been able to find him. Finally, someone got a hold of him, found out he was at his mom’s, and he’s on his way back to the diner where he’s going to hold court.”

“Hold court?”

“To interview all the women who want to marry him!” Teagan said. There didn’t seem to be any sarcasm in her voice, as if she, like Cassie, believed that there would be so many women Mav would have a hard time choosing.

“I heard something similar. That he was trying to find a girl to marry today.” Cassie couldn’t keep the depression out of her voice. And Teagan’s face fell.

“Then why aren’t you there? With bells on? Do you want me to help you fix your hair? We can do your makeup. I’ll help you pick out something to wear?” Teagan grabbed her hand, her smile back on her face, but it slowly faded as she studied Cassie. “You’re not going to try, are you?”

“I can’t. You know what I promised.”

“God put this opportunity right in front of you!”

“No. It’s a temptation. I can’t go and fix my hair, put on special clothes, and run out, clawing and scratching and trying to get to the front of the line just so Mav will pick me.
